Update:

Putting aside the disappointment of the Kentucky Derby, Journalism romped home to win the 2025 Preakness Stakes.

The favorite fell to five length behind Gosger at one point but finished strongly to reel in the leader and snatch first place. Gosger clinched second, followed by Sandman in third and Goal Oriented at fourth.

Journalism was the favorite heading into the race, typically priced at 6-to-5 to emerge victorious from a talented field. This year’s was the 150th anniversary of the iconic race and it marked the final time that it will be held at Pimlico Race Course.

Preakness Stakes prize money 2025

Prize pots have increased across the board in recent years and the Preakness Stakes has gone in the same direction. In 2024 the $2 million total prize purse was a new record and organizers have kept that same level for 2025.

Of that, the winner will take home $1.2 million of the total purse. In addition, the winner gets a replica of the legendary Woodlawn Vase trophy, often considered one of the most valuable in all sports. Here’s a look at the full break-down, with more than half of the nine-horse field taking home prize money...

Preakness Stakes 2025 - Prize money

Winner - $1.2 million
Second place - $400,000
Third place - $220,000
Fourth place - $120,000
Fifth place - $60,000

According to a prize-money breakdown by racing expert Keeler Johnson, the horse’s owner typically takes home 80% of the payout, with 10% each shared out to the jockey and the trainer.
