Roger Federer made public his hope of seeing Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic on the same team at the Laver Cup 2024, saying that he “would love” to see them together.

In statements made to Eurosport, Federer gave his thoughts on the win for Team World over Team Europe, saying that the winners “destroyed Team Europe. Team World played fantastic, they really brought the energy. Everybody brought a point, they were stronger in the doubles. In the singles too, they were moving fast, they were ready to go. They thoroughly deserved victory.”

‘I think we’ll have much better energy as Team Europe’

“I don’t miss it”, said the Swiss star when asked how he his spending his retirement. “It’s great to be back in the tennis family again, and the first time experiencing the Laver Cup with a totally different angle. Here I tried to watch every match and it’s been fantastic. We talk about the volleys and the doubles, and how it was back in the 60s and 70s. Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe both said how Rod Laver was their hero, he was way before my time but I know what he represents in tennis.”

The next edition of the Laver Cup will be held in Berlin, a city that excites Federer and a new place for the tennis legend to explore while he enjoys the tournament: “We can speak German, very much looking forward to Berlin, a city I don’t know very well. I can’t wait to go there. I think it’s great to take tennis back to Germany. I think we’ll have much better energy as Team Europe.”

‘I would love to see actually Alcaraz and Novak on the same team’

Federer was asked about his preferences for a Team Europe lineup, and he was certainly not shy about who he wants to see: “I would like to see Novak again, to be honest. I would love to see actually Alcaraz and Novak on the same team. Love to see that happen.”

“Zverev would be great just for the German market as well and he’s been such a great supporter of the Laver Cup and somebody like Rune, he pulled out here too and I think that hurt really Team Europe, losing Tsitsipas and Rune. So, I mean there’s going to be a lot to choose from.”

[Daniil] Medvedev obviously would be great”, Federer continued, “I like watching [Andrey] Rublev as well, I think he tried really hard but it was a tough weekend for him. Hopefully, maybe, somebody is going break through as well and maybe get a chance to be a pick for Bjorn Borg as well. I think we’re going to have a much better team as Team Europe to be honest”, he concluded, “I think the energy is going to come back to our side and hopefully Team Europe can win again. I’m biased.”
