The surprising reason why the Farmers Insurance Open starts today, Wednesday Jan. 22
Yep, we were surprised too when we saw the PGA Tour event was starting on Wednesday instead of Thursday. What’s the reason behind the decision?

Blame it on the Chiefs and the NFL referees. No, just joking. The NFL zebras have got enough grief lately for helping out Patrick Mahomes. It’s not their fault, but it is because there are two important football games on Sunday.
The reason the Farmers Insurance Open was moved up a day
The truth is the pro golfers don’t want to compete with the NFL. As everyone knows by now, the Commanders will face the Eagles in Philadelphia at 3 p.m. in the NFC Conference final and then the Chiefs are playing against the Bills in Kansas City Sunday at 6:30 p.m. ET in the AFC Championship game. That’s tough competition for the PGA at the start of the season, even if they are playing at Torrey Pines.

Play will get underway on Wednesday and the fourth round will take place on Saturday with little or no competition from other sporting events. The 156 golfers will be competing for first place and $1.7 million that goes to the winner. Fan favorite Max Homa will be in the field along with Frenchman Matthieu Pavon, who will be looking to retain his title, but will be up against tough competition.

Not all of golf’s biggest names will be at Torrey Pines this week, but fans will be able to watch top players such as Will Zalatoris, Keegan Bradley, Hideki Matsuyama, Jason Day and Ludvig Aberg.
