This is Carmen Montero Mundt: meet F1 driver George Russell’s long-time girlfriend
The guys in the fast-moving cars get most of the attention, but there are others involved in their life.
If you’ve spotted George Russell, the 27-year-old British Formula 1 driver, on the grid with that calm, steely gaze and thought “who’s the woman beside him?”, you aren’t alone. Her name is Carmen Montero Mundt, his partner of around five years.
Who is Carmen Montero Mundt?
Montero Mundt has quietly become one of Formula 1’s most familiar paddock faces, even though the spotlight is said to have never really been her goal. Spanish born and London trained, she grew up in Jerez and moved to the UK at 18 to study business management and finance, later adding specialist training in asset allocation and risk.
Her story with Russell began in suitably low-key fashion. A mutual friend was meant to meet her in London, could not make it and he offered to “swing along” instead. She apparently didn’t recognise the rising F1 driver, which immediately set a different tone from the usual fame-first encounters. The two hit it off. By 2020 they were public as a couple and, five years on, they are still side by side on and off the grid.
What does Carmen Montero Mundt do?
While Russell, now 27, chases wins and a future world title with Mercedes, she brings a very different kind of high-performance mindset. After internships and consultancy roles in London, she joined investment firm Ruffer LLP as an investor relations associate, working there until late 2023 before stepping back, reportedly to focus on further study and evolving her finance career.
And her experience in finance is something she’s sharing with a growing following on social media, talking about investing, financial independence and especially why women should not outsource their financial futures.
Keep your eyes open if you want to see her again. She pops up at grands prix, at Wimbledon, and even renovating a flat with Russell in Spain, definitely looking more like a friend along for the ride rather than a staged accessory.
