GOLD CUP
60,000 tickets sold for Mexico vs Costa Rica in Gold Cup at AT&T Stadium
Fans of the Mexican National Team have definitively ended their boycott and are set to turn out in huge numbers.
Mexican fans are no longer boycotting the National Team and are instead showing their unwavering support for the players, as usual. Fans are flocking in their thousands to AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas to see their side take on Costa Rica in the Gold Cup.
Jimmy Lozano’s impact on the National Team as a living entity has been almost immeasurable. The manager, who replaced Diego Cocca just weeks ago, has managed in a short space of time to completely flip the mood and perception of everything related to the squad and the staff. Cocca’s reign was epitomised by a sense of discontent and frustration; Jimmy has opened the shutters and let the light shine through the windows of the FMF headquarters.
Mexico’s decline came as they slumped pitifully out of the World Cup group stage under the management of new Inter Miami boss, Tata Martino, who failed to ignite spirits and get the team playing the way that the individual quality of the squad suggested they could.
Lozano has turned the mood around in Mexico
After a long period of uncertainty, the FMF selected Diego Cocca to take control, but his time in charge never took off: reports of boycotts from the players filled the airwaves but it was the fans who ended up voting with their feet, staying away from the game against Panama in a drastic showing of frustration that had been bubbling ever since the failure in Qatar.
Cocca’s time came to its unfortunately inevitable end and he was replaced by Lozano, who has brought back a sense of togetherness, spirit and pride to the players and fans and everyone who wears the badge. The players look visibly happier and are no longer putting out contradictory, slightly sharp-tongued messages like Santiago Giménez and Edson Álvarez did on the eve of Cocca’s dismissal.
Who could Mexico play in the Gold Cup semi-finals?
They have since progressed through the group stage of the Gold Cup (despite a loss to Qatar) and scored 7 goals in 2 games against Honduras and Haiti. The upturn in form on the pitch has coincided with the return of the fans, who are set to turn out in their thousands for the quarter-final game against Costa Rica at the 80,000-seater AT&T Stadium. It is said that 60,000 tickets have been sold for the game which kicks off at 21:30 ET.
Mexico will, if they get past their central American rivals, will face either Guatemala or Jamaica in the semi-finals of the Gold Cup. Now what a way that would be for Jimmy to get people back in their seats.
