Ciudad de México Update:

After their elimination from the Liga MX’s Clausura 2026 tournament, Monterrey have confirmed that Nicolás Sánchez will not continue as Rayados head coach.

Through an official statement on social media, Monterrey announced the decision and also noted that both sides will discuss the possibility of Sánchez remaining with the organization in a different role.

“The club and Nicolás will maintain close communication with the intention of evaluating in the future the viability of his reincorporation in another position, based on the needs of both parties,” the statement read.

Unable to revive Rayados after taking over from Torrent

Sánchez, who had served as a club assistant coach since the summer of 2023, took over the first team after the dismissal of Doménec Torrent during the Clausura. However, results failed to follow, and Rayados ultimately missed out on a spot in the playoffs, in addition to being eliminated in the round of 16 of the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

Alongside Sánchez, the 40-year-old’s entire backroom team, including assistants Severo Meza and Esteban Landazabal, will leave their roles.

Among the names being considered to replace Sánchez are Matías Almeyda, Hernán Crespo and Martín Anselmi, with Almeyda the preferred option among the club’s top decision-makers.
