América and Toluca break with 20-year Liga MX tradition

The first leg of the Clausura 2025 final left fans underwhelmed. América and Toluca played to a goalless draw—something that hadn’t happened between these two sides in 20 years. Yes, it took 50 matches for a game between the Águilas and Diablos to end 0-0.

On paper, Toluca vs. América promised fireworks: the league’s best attack against its stingiest defense. Expectations were sky-high for goals in the opening chapter of this final. But they never came. The match at Ciudad de los Deportes Stadium ended 0-0, leaving everything to be decided at the Nemesio Diez Stadium.

With that result, a 20-year streak in Liga MX came to an end. The last time these teams finished 0-0 was back in April 2005, on Matchday 13 of that Clausura season, when they played to a scoreless draw at Estadio Azteca.

Since then, América and Toluca have consistently delivered thrilling matches filled with goals and drama. From blowouts to nail-biting draws—even a 7-2 rout in favor of América—these two sides had played 51 consecutive matches without a single goalless game.

Over the last two decades, América holds a slight edge in the head-to-head: 18 wins, 17 draws, and 16 wins for Toluca—a remarkably balanced rivalry.
