América reportedly close to signing Malagón ahead of Clausura 2023
Amid uncertainty over Guillermo Ochoa’s future at Club América, Las Águilas are seemingly set to sign Luis Malagón from Necaxa.
Club América are reportedly close to signing Necaxa goalkeeper Luis Malagón amid uncertainty over the future of Las Águilas’ current number one, Guillermo Ochoa.
Malagón fee agreed - Superdeportivo’s Merlo
According to Superdeportivo journalist César Merlo, América have agreed a fee with Necaxa for Malagón, whose value is estimated by Transfermarkt at 3.5 million euros. The 13-time Mexican champions’ second signing of the close-season period could be confirmed in the coming days.
América have already added Puebla defender Israel Reyes to their ranks ahead of the Liga MX Clausura 2023 tournament, which begins in early January.
A product of the Morelia youth academy, Malagón joined Necaxa in 2020, establishing himself as a fixture in the team at the Estadio Victoria. In total, he made 72 appearances for the club.
Malagón’s role at América
As América continue to negotiate a new contract with Ochoa - whose present deal expires at the end of December - it remains unclear what Malagón’s role in Fernando Ortiz’s squad would be.
If, as expected, Ochoa does agree an extension, Malagón would be back-up to the 37-year-old. The current second-choice keeper, Óscar Jiménez, is likely to leave in search of regular first-team football.
Querétaro up first for América
América, who reached the semi-finals of the Apertura 2022 tournament, kick off their Clausura 2023 campaign at home to Querétaro on 7 January.
