American MLS Cup winner leaves LA Galaxy for Mexican giant Club América

Club América has officially unveiled its first signing of the Guillermo Almada era, announcing the arrival of American midfielder Edwin Cerrillo from the LA Galaxy ahead of the remainder of the Apertura 2026 season.

After days of speculation and growing frustration among fans over the club’s lack of transfer activity, América confirmed the deal Sunday through its official social media channels.

The signing comes as Las Águilas remain unbeaten through their first three Liga MX matches, sitting at the top of the Apertura 2026 standings with seven points before the league pauses for the Leagues Cup.

Club América adds MLS champion to midfield

Cerrillo, who is of Mexican descent, arrives after spending the past three seasons with the LA Galaxy, making 117 appearances for the club following his 2023 move from FC Dallas.

During his time in Los Angeles, the American midfielder helped the Galaxy capture the 2024 MLS Cup, adding championship experience to an América squad looking to compete for multiple trophies this season.

The 25-year-old is expected to strengthen Almada’s midfield as the Mexican giants prepare for a demanding stretch that includes both domestic and international competition.

When could Edwin Cerrillo make his Club América debut?

Cerrillo could make his first appearance for América as early as Thursday when the club opens its Leagues Cup campaign against San Diego FC. Las Águilas will also face the Portland Timbers and Austin FC during the tournament’s opening phase.

If he does not feature in the Leagues Cup, his Liga MX debut would likely come on Aug. 16, when Club América hosts Atlético de San Luis in Matchday 4 of the Apertura 2026 after the league resumes.

The announcement of Cerrillo’s signing came just hours after Club América defeated Santos Laguna, extending its unbeaten start to the new Liga MX season.
