Angel City star Sydney Leroux makes ‘tough mental health’ decision

Angel City kick-started their 2025 NWSL campaign this weekend with Alyssa Thompson scoring early in the second half as the LA side managed a 1-1 tie against the San Diego Wave on Sunday in the rivals' season opener in Los Angeles.

As the team now plan for the season ahead and Friday’s away game in Portland, they will do so without striker Sydney Leroux with the 34-year-old confirming that she needs time away from the game.

In an Instagram post, the former USWNT star stated: “This is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to say or admit to myself. But after a lot of reflection, I’ve made the difficult decision to step away from soccer for my mental health,” Leroux said.

“Anyone who knows me knows I’m a fighter -- I always have been. I take pride in showing up, in giving everything I have, but right now I owe it to myself and my children to take a step back and take care of me.

“This isn’t goodbye, I will be back, just like always in true Syd fashion.”

Since her move to Angel City from Orlando in 2022, Leroux has scored 10 goals in 42 NWSL matches for Angel City.
