Update:

Kylian Mbappé was the biggest name missing when Pep Guardiola’s Premier League giants Manchester City came to the Bernabéu on Wednesday. Predictions by most weren’t favoring the home team. But what happened next shocked everyone: a 3-0 first leg win, and a performance we didn’t know was possible, given the form this season.

With that in mind, and doubts growing about the value of picking players that combine well trumping superstars who work individually, the return of the Frenchman feels less concerning. Speaking on Friday at Valdebebas, though, it wasn’t long before Álvaro Arbeloa was asked about his condition, and confirmed that he will miss Saturday’s LaLiga game against Elche but could return for next week’s Champions League trip to Manchester.

He is getting better every day, his progress is what it should be,” Arbeloa said. “We made a plan, it depends on how he develops, but I see him in very good shape. He will not be there tomorrow, but I trust that he will travel to Manchester.”

The Madrid coach later reinforced that message, explaining the final decision will depend on how Mbappé feels over the next couple of days.

I want him to be able to go to Manchester, we will see how he feels. On Sunday we will decide. Hopefully he can be there.

For now, Madrid are not willing to take risks ahead of what could be a decisive European night. Arbeloa made it clear that Mbappé will not be rushed back for the visit of Elche at the Bernabéu.

Instead, the club’s focus is on having the forward ready for the biggest games, when they need the magic. If Mbappé continues to progress as expected, he could still be part of Madrid’s squad for what Arbeloa called a crucial trip to Manchester. And if they can avoid a collapse there, the very impressive Bayern will lie ahead.
