Barcelona edge Rayo Vallecano as Joan García shines to keep LaLiga lead
A sensational performance from Joan García denies a superior Rayo side, beaten in Barcelona by Araújo’s headed goal from a corner.
Rayo Vallecano made Barcelona suffer throughout, but the hosts leaned on Joan García and a set-piece header from Araújo to secure three points that keep them top of LaLiga until after the international break. The 1-0 scoreline flatters Barça and does little justice to a Rayo side that pushed them to the brink.
It is becoming a pattern: after standout performances like the one against Newcastle, Barcelona tend to dip in the following game. It also happened after facing Atlético Madrid in the Copa return leg. Whether it is physical, mental, or down to the toll of the Champions League is unclear, though that would be no excuse given Rayo had less rest coming in.
Barcelona start the strongest lineup
After the defeat in Girona, Hansi Flick publicly set the target of taking maximum points before the league break. Against Rayo, the German named what he currently sees as his strongest available lineup, given the absences, making no concessions. That included Joan García in goal, who started after a specific pre-match warm-up, having briefly left early, possibly for treatment in the locker room.
At first, the Barcelona goalkeeper looked fine. Just 53 seconds in, Barça produced their customary early defensive lapse, and García had to bail them out from point-blank range against Carlos Martín. All seemed well until a scare 10 minutes later, when the goalkeeper dropped to one knee and required treatment. Wojciech Szczęsny began warming up, looking like a man suddenly called into a shift, but to everyone’s relief, especially his own, doctor Pruna signaled García could continue. That proved decisive, as he went on to become Barcelona’s hero, making three outstanding saves in the second half to deny a Rayo side that has often troubled the Catalans.
Aside from Martín’s early chance, Rayo started true to form, bold and proactive. Íñigo Pérez even left regular starters like Álvaro, Alemao and De Frutos on the bench, with Thursday’s Conference League game taking its toll.
The stoppage for García disrupted Rayo’s rhythm, and Barcelona gradually took control. Raphinha threatened first, winning the ball off Pathé Ciss and racing through on goal, only to drag his right-footed effort just wide. Before halftime, Batalla responded with a superb save, tipping a powerful strike onto the crossbar.
Barcelona take the lead from Araújo
Before that, Barcelona had taken the lead from a set piece. João Cancelo’s corner caught Batalla misjudging his run, and Araújo headed home.
The set piece was one of the few attacking outlets for a Barcelona side that struggled to find fluency. Lamine Yamal again found himself up against Pep Chavarría, one of the defenders who handles him best, while Robert Lewandowski was largely anonymous for the opening 45 minutes.
The Polish striker remained on the bench after the break as Ferran Torres was given another chance. For Rayo, Álvaro García replaced Carlos Martín, and Pacha Espino came on for Óscar Valentín.
Rayo dominate second half
The second half was dominated from start to finish by Rayo, who pinned back a Barcelona side that looked sluggish, tired, imprecise and out of position. Each substitution from Íñigo Pérez increased the pressure, forcing Barça to rely on Joan García, who produced standout saves from Álvaro, a header by Unai and another effort from De Frutos.
The one he did not stop came from the clearest chance of all, when Pacha Espino had three teammates available for a tap-in but chose to go alone, sending his shot wide.
That moment summed up the night. It was not Rayo’s day. It was Joan García’s, after a week in the spotlight, emerging stronger as the key figure in a Barcelona side that claimed three crucial points in a decisive clash.
