Bernardo Silva casts doubt on Barcelona move: “I’m going to look for a team that truly wants me”

Barça believed a deal for Bernardo Silva was nearly complete, but the Manchester City star is now weighing multiple offers ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Bernardo Silva’s potential move to Barcelona has taken a dramatic and unexpected turn.

Just last week, the agreement between the Catalan club and the Portuguese midfielder appeared to be all but finalized. Silva was expected to sign a two-year contract after winning the backing of Barcelona’s sporting leadership, who were united in their belief that he would be a valuable addition to the squad.

Flick hesitant over Bernando move

Head coach Hansi Flick had been the most hesitant voice regarding the move, but he ultimately gave his approval, provided Barcelona first created room in the roster through departures in midfield and possibly in attack as well.

“Barcelona is an option for me, but I haven’t made a decision yet. I’m going to look for a team that truly wants me,” Silva said after Portugal’s match against Chile.

Those comments came as a surprise, given the widespread belief that his dream was to finally play for Barcelona. Silva has long been linked with a move to Camp Nou, and the interest was mutual. In fact, the initial approach reportedly came from his agent, Jorge Mendes, as signing the veteran midfielder was not originally among Barcelona’s top priorities this summer.

Madrid rivals interested in Portugal star

Silva had hoped to settle his future before the 2026 World Cup, but he now appears willing to take more time before making a final decision.

One possible reason for the delay is the sheer number of offers on the table. Barcelona is not the only club pursuing the 31-year-old.

Atlético Madrid is also interested, and Silva could find a clearer path to a regular starting role under Diego Simeone than he might at Barcelona.

Real Madrid enters the conversation

Real Madrid is another club closely monitoring the situation. The Spanish giant is reportedly interested in taking advantage of what many view as one of the best opportunities on the market.

Available on a free transfer, Silva remains highly regarded despite turning 31. His performances for Manchester City this past season reinforced the belief that he still has plenty to offer at the highest level.

His technical quality, tactical versatility, and strong injury record continue to make him one of Europe’s most attractive midfield options.

For now, the final decision rests with Silva.

Barcelona has already presented its two-year contract offer and had expected it would be accepted. However, club officials are reportedly unwilling to enter a bidding war, meaning the Portuguese international must now decide whether Camp Nou remains his preferred destination or if another opportunity proves too tempting to ignore.
