German side Borussia Dortmund are thought to be lining up a bid for FC Cincinnati forward Brandon Vázquez, who is currently in action with USMNT in the Gold Cup.

The 24-year-old scored 18 goals in 33 appearances in the 2022 MLS season and helped his team to an impressive fifth-placed finish last campaign. Gladbach may soon be in need of attacking reinforcements with last season’s top scorer Marcus Thuram poised to finalise a move to Inter Milan.

TUDN’s Michele Giannone reports that the German side have identified Vázquez as the ideal replacement for the Frenchman. The report adds that Gladbach’s directors have already travelled to the United States to watch Vázquez in action and met with the player in person to discuss his potential role within the team.

FC Cincinnati eager to keep Vázquez

A move to a top European league will certainly hold an appeal and FC Cincinnati could likely extract a significant transfer fee for the player. However at this stage the club are keen to keep the player that has helped fire the team to the top of the Eastern Conference this season.

To lose such a key player at this point of the season would be a major blow for Pat Noonan’s team but Vázquez admitted earlier this year that a move overseas does appeal to him.

“Of course I’ve always dreamt of going overseas and playing in Europe and that’s still the objective for me, but we’re just not there yet” Vazquez said back in April.

He continued: “This summer, for me it’s still uncertain what’s going to happen. The only thing I know for certain is what I have with Cincinnati right now, and we’re still currently battling to be first place in the East.”

Before any further transfer dealing can take place, however, there is the small matter of a Gold Cup on home soil for USMNT. The team underwhelmed in the opening fixture with a 1-1 draw with Jamaica; Vázquez scored the only goal for BJ Callaghan’s side.
