Toluca goalkeeper Tiago Volpi continues to make history in the Liga MX. The Brazilian goalkeeper secured his place among the top 10 goal scorers of the Clausura 2024, after netting his fifth goal of the campaign against Pachuca on Saturday. Incredibly as it sounds, a goalkeeper keeper figures among the top scorers in the competition - Volpi is only two behind leaders Salomón Rondón and Luis Antonio Amarilla.

Penalty retaken

With half an hour gone at Hidalgo Stadium, and the scoreboard reading 1-1, the visitors appealed for a penalty when Juan Pablo Domínguez was scythed down by Sergio Barreto. Volpi stepped up to take the kick but his effort was brilliantly saved by Carlos Moreno. However, the Tuzos keeper was adjudged to have been off his line when the kick was taken, and following a VAR review, the penalty was ordered to be retaken. This time he tricked Moreno by picking the same spot, tucking the ball low inside the post.

Alexis Vega made it 1-3 10 minutes later and although Bryan González managed to pull one back for the hosts, it ended 2-3 on the whistle, bringing up Toluca’s seventh win of the campaign.

LIGA MX Clausura 2024 top scorers

  • 7 Luis Amarilla (Mazatlán)
    7 Salomón Rondón (Pachuca)
  • 6 Diber Cambindo (Necaxa)
    6 Víctor Guzmán (Chivas)
    6 Federico Viñas (León)
    6 Guillermo Martinez (Pumas)
    6 Christian Rivera (Tijuana)
  • 5 Érick Sánchez (Pachuca)
    5 Brandon Vazquez (Monterrey)
    5 Sergio Canales (Monterrey)
    5 Uriel Antuna (Cruz Azul)
    5 Eduardo Aguirre (Atlas)
    5 Thiago Volpi (Toluca)

During the current tournament, Volpi has scored against: Pumas, Tigres, Santos Laguna and Mazatlán. All of those games were at the Nemesio Díez Stadium, so yesterday’s strike against the Tuzos was his first away from home. Toluca have a flawless home record this season, having won all six games played at their stadium.

Volpi meanwhile remains in the running to end as the Clausura’s maximum goal scorer. He is behind Sergio Canales, Brandon Vázquez, Christian Rivera, Guillermo Martínez, Federico Viñas, Víctor Guzmán, Diber Cambindo, Amarilla and Rondón. He’s only two goals behind but all of his goals come from the penalty spot. In total he has scored 15 goals for Toluca, making him the second top-scoring goalkeeper in Liga MX history.

Saturday’s victory keeps Toluca in third place in the general table on 26 points - just two points behind top two América and Monterrey. The team is next in action on Sunday when Atlas are guests in Week 14.
