Edson Álvarez and Jorge Sánchez of Ajax beat Santi Giménez’s Feyenoord and will play the final of the Dutch Cup
In a controversial match, Ajax were the superior side against Feyenoord and they will face Érick Gutiérrez’s PSV in the final.
This edition of De Klassieker will be marred by the assault suffered by Ajax footballer Davy Klaassen after a fan threw a lighter at the footballer, causing him to bleed dramatically from a cut on the back of his head. For half an hour the game was stopped, and after a surprising restart was decided, the footballer requested that he be taken off the pitch just a minute later.
But it was not the first fan-induced incident the even had suffered: from the start, a cloud of smoke from the flares delayed the start of the match.
Super Santi scores again
Away from the disgusting act of violence from the fan, Ajax won the game 2-1 after comfortably being the better team on the night. Club captain Dusan Tadic scored the first goal after 14 minutes thanks to a cross from Jorge Sánchez that the Feyenoord defensive line was unable to clear.
Later in the game, seconds before the break for half-time, Mexican sensation Santiago Giménez bagged the equaliser for his team with a fantastic header; Sánchez missed the ball and the striker found himself alone in the area for his 17th goal this season.
It was in the second half when Davy Klaassen was attacked by the fan violence at the De Kuip stadium after he scored the goal to make the tie 1-2 to Ajax.
There will be a Mexican champion and even a possible rematch
The match for the trophy will have as an extra touch of intrigue the fascinating Mexican duel between Edson Álvarez, Jorge Sánchez and Érick Gutiérrez, in a repeat of last year’s final, which PSV won. On that occasion, an early Gravenberch goal for Ajax meant that it fell to the former Pachuca midfielder, Gutiérrez, to equalise for his team before Cody Gakpo, now at Liverpool, completed the comeback to obtain the KNVB Cup for PSV.
