How the United States could dominate European soccer in 2025

In their debut season as owners of Inter Milan, U.S.-based Oaktree Capital Management had reason to celebrate, as the club booked its place in the UEFA Champions League final after a thrilling 4–3 extra-time win over Barcelona in the second leg – sealing a 7–6 aggregate victory.

The American fund took control of the Italian club on May 22, 2024, after Chinese president Steven Zhang failed to repay a $426 million loan from Oaktree, issued in 2021.

Since taking over, the new management has continued to steer the team toward success. In addition to reaching the final of Europe’s top competition, Inter are also vying for the Serie A title, though they currently trail Napoli in the standings.

America’s hand in European football

With Oaktree now overseeing Inter, the United States will be represented in the Champions League final – and is on the verge of doing so in the other two major European competitions as well.

At Manchester United, the Glazer family remain co-owners despite Jim Ratcliffe now holding a majority stake. The team is in a strong position to reach the Europa League final after a commanding 3–0 first-leg win in Bilbao, and will look to finish the job at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Chelsea – owned by American businessman Todd Boehly – are also closing in on a place in the UEFA Conference League final.
