Inter Miami vs Orlando City: preview
Inter Miami have come into the new season as one of the favourites to lift MLS Cup. They missed out on the playoffs last year, but their 2023 campaign was a season of two halves: before Messi, and after Messi. Before Messi they were languishing at the bottom of the Eastern Conference, but his mid-season arrival sparked a significant up-tick in performances that landed the club the Leagues Cup.
The Herons strengthened again in the off-season and brought in Luis Suárez and Julian Gressel to bolster their ranks. They began 2024 with a solid 2-0 victory over Real Salt Lake and they will be a force to be reckoned with this year.
But Inter Miami are not the only Floridian team putting in the work in the off-season. Orlando City are looking to capitalise on 2023′s best-ever MLS finish, second only to Supporters Shield winners FC Cincinnati. They have added real attacking quality in the form of Luis Muriel and Nicolas Lodeiro and managed to keep hold of top scorer Duncan McGuire, albeit unexpectedly.
Those incomings make Orlando genuine contenders for MLS Cup this year and they would dearly love to get one over on their neighbours in this early season encounter. Óscar Pareja’s side are still a little inexperienced but they have the quality and the dynamism to cause Inter Miami some real problems.

Inter Miami vs Orlando City prediction
The Herons looked to have put their patchy preseason form behind them with an opening night victory over Real Salt Lake, but the same old defensive fragility was apparent in Sunday’s draw with LA Galaxy. Orlando City have added real attacking quality over the off-season and in Facundo Torres and Duncan McGuire have the pace in attack to trouble Miami.
When these two sides met in the Leagues Cup last year, Orlando felt the full force of Miami’s Messi-inspired turnaround. The Argentine scored twice in a 3-1 win for the Herons, but Orlando should be better placed to deal with Messi this time around.
This weekend’s Turnpike Derby brings together two of the strongest rosters in MLS, but Orlando look better balanced and should come out on top. Prediction: Inter Miami 2-3 Orlando City.
