Club América centre-back Néstor Araujo could be on his way to Greek club AEK Athens, where he would link up with fellow Mexico international Orbelín Pineda.

Almeyda in for Araujo once again - third time lucky?

AEK head coach Matías Almeyda has targeted Araujo, according to reports in the Greek media, having tried to sign the 31-year-old twice before.

During his time as boss at Chivas Guadalajara, América’s arch rivals, Almeyda missed out on Araujo when he chose a 2018 move from Santos Laguna to Spanish club Celta Vigo.

The Argentine coach then launched an unsuccessful attempt to take the defender from Vigo to AEK in 2022, but lost out to América.

Araujo passport a plus

Araujo is an attractive option for AEK as he holds a European Union passport, so would not fill one of the club’s limited available spots for non-EU players

As well as being international team-mates, Araujo and Pineda coincided at Celta in the 2021/22 season.

Pizarro closing in on Athens switch

Greek champions AEK are also poised to sign Mexican Rodolfo Pizarro, who is set to undergo a medical ahead of a move from MLS franchise Inter Miami.
