Manchester United have released their retained list for the 2023/24 season. Young forward Mason Greenwood is among those who are staying at Old Trafford, although the club made no specific comment on his future.

In the accompanying statement, the club simply wrote: “Manchester United’s retained list has been sent to the Premier League, ahead of the full announcement.”

Some players, like David de Gea and Phil Jones, were mentioned by name in the attached statement, outlining the decision made by the club. For Greenwood, there was no such explanation.

His existing deal keeps him at the club until June 2025 and United have not yet made a decision on whether he should be allowed to return to first team consideration. Today’s news simply means that the current state of affairs is set to continue, with Greenwood still under contract at Manchester United but unable to play pending a decision from the club.

Greenwood has not played for United in nearly 18 months after videos that emerged on social media led to a series of domestic abuse-related charges being brought against him.

He was arrested in January last year before being charged in October 2022 with a series of crimes. The charges were discontinued in February but he is yet to return to the squad and is undergoing counselling.
