Update:

In recent days, a number of candidates have been linked with the vacancy at Rayados, who are looking to appoint a new head coach following the dismissal of Martín Demichelis. The club’s increasingly urgent search continues.

Demichelis out after Liga MX, Champions Cup exits

Monterrey endured an unconvincing first half of 2025, suffering elimination from the CONCACAF Champions Cup in the round of 16, before exiting the Liga MX playoffs in the quarter-finals.

As a result, the club decided to end Demichelis’ tenure, less than a year after appointing the Argentine.

Who could replace Demichelis in Monterrey?

Currently, Rayados are working tirelessly to bring in Demichelis’s replacement.

With the squad currently on vacation, the club hopes to have its new coach in place by May 26, when the players return to training and begin preparations for the FIFA Club World Cup.

However, the list of potential candidates remains extensive. One of the most intriguing options for Monterrey is Domènec Torrent, who left Atlético San Luis last month.

Although Torrent was thought to have reached an agreement with Chivas Guadalajara, that deal now appears to have fallen through, opening the door for Rayados to pursue the Spaniard.

Rayados have also been eyeing a move for Matías Almeyda, who this week parted company with the Greek club AEK Athens. The club has attempted to persuade Almeyda to return to Mexican soccer, despite the Argentine’s reluctance to do so. However, talks with the 51-year-old have not progressed.

In addition to Torrent and Almeyda, Gabriel Milito and Hernán Crespo are also on the list. Milito and Crespo are also currently unattached.

When is Rayados’ first CWC game?

Time is ticking, and Monterrey’s need to finalize the appointment of a new head coach is becoming ever more pressing. The team’s opening came in the Club World Cup is on June 17, when they face Italians Inter Milan in Pasadena, California.
