Mazatlán FC are in search of a new head coach following the departure of Víctor Manuel Vucetich. Known as ‘King Midas,’ Vucetich led the Cañoneros in the last two Liga MX tournaments - missing out on the playoffs on both occasions - and has now decided to step down.

Vucetich out for personal reasons

In an official statement on Tuesday, Mazatlán announced Vucetich’s exit ahead of the Apertura 2025, citing “personal reasons”.

“Head coach Víctor Manuel Vucetich has decided not to continue with the project he was leading,” the club said.

“We value and sincerely thank Víctor for his work, knowledge, effort, and dedication shown at all times during his tenure with the men’s first team. We wish him the best of success in both his personal and professional life.”

Over the years, Mexican soccer has seen a decline in the number of homegrown head coaches, with foreign appointments becoming more prevalent. A clear example of this trend is the Clausura 2025 tournament, which has featured only six Mexican-coached teams.

Mexican coaches on the wane

As things stand, pending off-season managerial appointments, Efraín Juárez (Pumas), Benjamín Mora (Querétaro) and Gonzalo Pineda (Atlas) are the only Mexican head coaches in place in the Liga MX.

It is also worth noting that Cirilo Saucedo is to serve as assistant coach at Tijuana, where the Uruguayan Sebastián Abreu has been installed in the top job.
