Leeds grab victory over Liverpool with late goal from Summerville at Anfield
Goals from Rodrigo and Summerville at either end of the match saw Leeds record a vital away win in the Premier League, Van Dijk’s first defeat at Anfield.
Leeds Utd headed to Anfield expecting little, having lost four in a row and with Jesse Marsch in all sorts of bother having failed to win a game in two months.
But it all started remarkably brightly for the visitors, with Gomez rolling a ball back for Alisson, only to find his keeper wasn’t where he thought it was. The ball trundled across to Rodrigo, who simply had to tap home to score.
Leeds’ euphoria though was tempered when Salah, with an Inspector Gadget style extending leg, popped it home at the back post from a Robertson ball across the face. Liverpool 1-1 Leeds with just 14 minutes played.
Leeds win it through Summerville
And the visiting fans, who had been tremendous throughout, were gifted with the sweetest of winners with 89 minutes on the clock, when Summerville got the ball in the box, nicked in between Van Dijk and Gomez and beat Alisson with a shot into the bottom right hand corner.
Leeds held on for six minutes of time added on, to record a famous win, and pick up a vital three points that sees them jump out of the relegation zone and into 15th place.
Liverpool, who recorded their first home defeat since March 2021 were well off the pace. They are now back in 9th with any lingering title hopes now gone.
