The crisis at Monterrey is no longer just a rough patch - it has turned into a full‑blown fire. After this weekend’s 3-1 defeat against Pachuca on matchday 15 of the Clausura 2026 tournament, Rayados have sunk to 14th place in the standings, effectively dropping out of playoff contention and cementing one of the club’s worst campaigns in recent years.

Subbed star’s snub

But the disaster goes far beyond the scoreboard. Tensions boiled over when Lucas Ocampos, in a gesture that is already making the rounds on social media, refused to shake hands with Rayados head coach Nicolás Sánchez as he was subbed off. Cameras also caught him muttering complaints under his breath on the walk to the bench, a scene that made it clear the internal fracture is just as deep as the sporting one.

For Ocampos, this is his lowest point since arriving at the club. Previously criticized for dismissive gestures toward the fans during the loss to Atlético San Luis, the Argentine once again found himself in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. His performances on the field offer little defense: with just one goal in 12 appearances and a scoring frequency of one every 493 minutes, the winger has become a symbol of the team’s offensive paralysis.

A Clausura to forget

Monterrey’s numbers are grim. With only 15 points out of a possible 45, Rayados are mired in a string of negative results that includes painful losses to Pachuca, Atlético San Luis and Chivas Guadalajara. What’s more, Sánchez’s men exited the CONCACAF Champions Cup at the hands of Cruz Azul last month. A lack of attacking creation and glaring defensive fragility have pushed the club to the edge of mathematical elimination from Liga MX playoff contention - and with indiscipline from its marquee players, the tournament feels all but condemned to be one to forget.
