Guillermo Ochoa and Salernitana suffered a third successive defeat in Serie A and a fourth in all competitions against Genoa on Sunday, with head coach Filippo Inzaghi critical of the Mexican goalkeeper’s performance in the 2-1 defeat.

Former América goalkeeper “didn’t make any saves” against Genoa

Speaking to DAZN, former Juventus and AC Milan striker Inzaghi claimed the 38-year-old, who is back at full fitness after a recent injury, had underperformed by not making any saves: “Ochoa didn’t make any saves, normally the goalkeeper makes two or three stops. But now we have another game at home and we have to recover immediately. We must turn things around, we mustn’t give up. If you can’t win these games, you have to at least draw them,” he said.

Inzaghi’s assessment of the game different from that of stats specialists Sofascore, who recorded three stops during the match and gave the Mexico international a rating of seven out of 10.

The Salernitana boss lamented that his team had lost, in his view, because of individual errors and believed a draw would have been a fair result. “It’s disappointing because we lost without them having any real opportunities. That shouldn’t happen. We conceded the goal and then the penalty. The team never looked in danger and tried to build going forward. The spirit was there, but individual mistakes penalised us more than we deserved. We also hit the crossbar and deserved at least a draw.”

Ochoa’s Salernitana in relegation danger

Former Italy attacker Inzaghi took over as Salernitana manager in October 2023 and has overseen 13 Serie A matches, winning only two, drawing three and losing eight. As a result of their ongoing poor form, they are bottom of the table with 12 points, six from safety, and appear to be in grave danger of relegation having been promoted to the Italian top flight in 2021.
