Mexico vs. Sweden preview

As they prepare for an eighth successive trip to the finals, Mexico will try to record a good performance against Sweden after beating Iraq 4-0.

However, El Tri has struggled against the European side, failing to score in their last three matches against them.

Mexico seeking revenge

Four years ago, Mexico’s defeat to the Swedes cost them first place in their group, so they ended up playing against Brazil instead of Switzerland in the round of 16. They haven’t been able to beat Sweden since 1994.

However, this Mexico squad, led by Gerardo Martino, hasn’t allowed their opponents a single shot on target in two of their previous three games.

Sweden was not that lucky, as they lost their final two UEFA qualifiers in Group B last November so they won’t be competing in Qatar.

Jane Andersson’s men couldn’t score in three of their final four qualifiers, including a 2-0 loss to Poland in the playoff round.

Sweden missing the winning days

Sweden, who have only won one of their last six games, was relegated to League B for the next UEFA Nations League tournament, finishing at the bottom of Group 4.

The Swedes have also struggled in the early moments of the matches, conceding the opening goal in four of their last five clashes, and when that happened, they ended up losing.

Mexico vs. Sweden prediction

El Tri has shown way more fire power up front lately, but Sweden will likely be more consistent in defense than Iraq. Moreover, the Mexico players may already be thinking in their first World Cup game and could be aiming to keep their powder somewhat dry until then.
