Monterrey new boy Omar Govea: I want to win Liga MX with Rayados

Monterrey, Nuevo León
Midfielder Omar Govea has been unveiled as a new Monterrey player, the 26-year-old signing on an initial loan deal from Romanians Voluntari.

Omar Govea is now a Monterrey player, having joined the Liga MX club on an initial year-long loan from Romanian side Voluntari. As tradition dictates, the Mexican midfielder was on Wednesday officially unveiled at the Estadio BBVA, his new home.

Before stepping onto the pitch at the 53,000-capacity arena, Govea - who is to wear the No. 5 - spoke of his determination to help bring success to the five-time Mexican champions.

“That’s what I came here for”: Govea targets Liga MX title

“By coming back to Mexico to join Rayados, I’ve come back to a club that challenges for silverware,” Govea told reporters. “I’ve made a good decision. I want to take full advantage of this experience; I can’t wait to play my first Clásico [against Tigres]. And I want to win the league. That’s what I came here for. I have a purchase option. When my loan period is up, I hope the club says it was a good decision to bring me in.”

“Good performances will get me into the national team”

After spells in Portugal, Belgium and Romania, Govea will be getting his first taste of top-flight Mexican soccer. In the Liga MX, he’s out to catch the eye so he can add to his four international caps for El Tri.

“I’ve learned a lot from my time in European soccer,” the 26-year-old said. “I’m really motivated to make my debut in the Mexican game. When I left for Europe, my hope was not to be back at such a young age. Good performances will get me into the national team, but the most important thing for now is to impress the [Monterrey] coach [Víctor Manuel Vucetich].

“Honestly, I’d say to youngsters who are looking to go to Europe: finish learning your trade first. It’s a different kind of soccer. Lately, Mexicans have had a better mentality.

“Mexican soccer is growing a lot; we can keep on improving, and in this league we have the platform to do just that. Promising generations are coming through. We need to get right behind whoever comes in as the [Mexico] coach. In Mexico there’s a lot of quality, but you have to having patience in the process, that’s what holds us back a bit. With hard work, the national team can take big steps forward.”

Govea eager to win over Monterrey support

Govea added: “I want to form a strong bond with the fans. What I say to you isn’t worth as much as what I demonstrate out on the pitch. I want to show that I’ve come here to improve, to help the team achieve its goals. All I can do is give my all and show complete professionalism.”
