It’s the time of truth for two World Cup ‘heavyweights’. The Netherlands and Argentina will battle it out at Lusail Stadium for a place in the tournament’s semifinals.

The Oranje are looking to go all the way in Qatar and finally lift their first World Cup, while La Albiceleste will rely on their roster’s quality, especially up front, and on Lionel Messi’s inspiration when most needed.

Louis Van Gaal’s pupils have been one of the most solid and regular teams in the competition so far, with eight goals scored and only two conceded.

The Dutch team, who haven’t still tasted defeat in the tournament and are now on a 19-game undefeated streak in all competitions with Van Gaal as a coach, were tipped to top Group A before the start of the tournament and that’s what they ended up doing, after defeating Senegal (0-2), Qatar (0-2), and sharing the spoils vs. Ecuador (1-1).

The three-time World Cup runners-up recorded another good performance against the USMNT in the Round of 16 by defeating them 3-1.

This time though will face a bigger test against Argentina, who are clear favorites to lift the trophy due to the experience and quality of their roster.

If the Netherlands have been regular throughout this World Cup, the same can’t be said of the South American squad, as they lost their opener to Saudi Arabia in one of the biggest upsets in recent times.

However, they bounced back with a crucial win over Mexico (2-0) with Messi guiding the team to victory in the second half. After that, they also came out on top against Robert Lewandowski’s Poland (2-0), topping Group C.

Against one of the stand-out teams in the tournament, Australia, Lionel Scaloni’s men managed to take the ticket to the quarterfinals with a 2-1 win, although the Argentinians were clearly the better team.

The last time Argentina progressed from the quarterfinals was in 2014 before finishing as runners-up, but they had been eliminated in their last three ties in the last eight in 1998, 2006, and 2010.

Netherlands vs Argentina: odds

Both nations played in the semifinals of the 2014 World Cup, with La Albiceleste advancing to the final on penalties, while the Europeans were banished to the third-place game.

Argentina have failed to score in each of their last three matches against the Netherlands, but they are on a 13-game scoring streak in all competitions, which could break their negative stats against the Oranje.

Despite failing to impress till now, Messi and co. are favorites to emerge victorious in the game at 11/10 (2.1), while an upset by the Netherlands is tipped at 9/4 (3.25). The draw is being paid at 2/1 (3.0).

Netherlands vs Argentina: predictions

As odds show, Argentina are favorites here, but not massive ones in a game that could well be decided by small details.

The Netherlands have probably recorded better performances, but Argentina have won the title twice and are also used to this kind of do-or-die games.

Will Dumfries, De Jong, Gakpo, Klaasen’s dynamic game prove too tricky for the Argentinians or will Messi, Di Maria, Álvarez be too inspired up front?

Prediction: Netherlands 1-1 Argentina (with ‘La Albiceleste’ edging it 1-2 in overtime)
