Tottenham head into this weekend currently in the relegation zone after their loss to Sunderland last week. It was Roberto De Zerbi’s debut as Spurs manager, and things didn’t not go to plan for the Italian manager.

Team building the his new squad

De Zerbi was brought in to play savior in North London during the international break after Tottenham let Igor Tudor go following what was a disastrous spell as interim manager. The former Marseille boss is the fourth manager Tottenham have had on the touchline in the last 12 months, and so far none have had the answer for their struggles in the league.

Their loss last week converted a nightmare scenario into reality as Spurs sunk into the bottom three of the table, and now relegation is a real possibility. Something has to change for a Tottenham side that have picked up just one point in their last eight Premier League matches and haven’t won a league match since right after Christmas.

De Zerbi has been around the block, having spent time in the Premier League with Brighton before setting sail to Marseille. He knows that sometimes it’s not about how a squad plays on the pitch as much as how well they get on off the pitch. That’s why he organized a high end dinner in Mayfair to bring the players together before the final six matches of the season.

Make or broke for Tottenham

According to the Telegraph, De Zerbi took it upon himself to organize the dinner after the loss to Sunderland last weekend. It was the same thing that former interim manager Igor Tudor tried during his 44 day spell that ended in disaster. Spurs fans will be hoping that this team building meal will work out a little better than it did under the Croatian who won just won of his seven matches while in charge.

It’s tough to come in to a club in such a short time and instill your tactics as a manager. Sometimes you have to have to try and bring the players together instead of working tirelessly on style of play during training. Time will tell if the dinner turned things around in the dressing room, but until then relegation is a very real, and expensive possibility.

Spurs could lose upwards of a quarter of a billion dollars should they get relegated. That would make them the most valuable club to get relegated in the history of English soccer. While it remains a very real possibility, Spurs have to take the relegation race one match at a time, starting with their home match against Brighton this weekend.
