LIGA MX

Pumas haven’t won yet with Dani Alves, can they get a much needed victory Saturday against Atlas?

The university side are getting close to rewriting the record books in the worst possible way, and are desperate to turn it around.

Things are not going well for the Pumas. The university team is closing in on equalling their worst period without a win over the past decade, when, back in the 2013 Apertura tournament, the Pumas went 11 consecutive winless games. This season, the Pumas have now gone eight games without recording a victory, the last time it was tasted being in matchday 3, when Necaxa were overcome 1-0.

No Dani Alves revival

Much was made of the superstar acquisition of Dani Alves but since he joined the club has played out four draws and four losses. It looks highly unlikely that the Pumas will secure a place in the post regular season liguilla.

The current streak mirrors that of the 2013 Apertura when the team started the championship with a 1-1 draw with Puebla, then they lost at home 0-3 to Querétaro, on matchday 3 they tied 0-0 with Toluca only to fall in the next game with Tigres 0-2. Matchday 5 saw a 0-2 defeat away in Tijuana and lost 2-0 before two 1-1 draws with León and then Atlas.

Matchday 8 saw a home defeat (1-4) to Club América followed by a 0-0 with Pachuca. The tenth and eleventh games finished in 1-0 defeats at home top Morelia and away in Guadalajara top Atlas FC.

Atlas next up

Saturday 3 September provides the latest challenge for the Pumas and a chance to end that winless streak. We will be keeping a close eye on proceedings.
