Real Madrid face harsh reality ahead of season-defining Bayern Munich showdown

Madrid’s draw with Girona and first-leg loss leave them needing a comeback in Munich to keep their Champions League hopes - and season - alive.

If “Wednesday’s game” really began on Friday, it started with a setback. At least emotionally.

Real Madrid’s draw against Girona felt like an unofficial surrender of their LaLiga title hopes. Add in the uncalled penalty on Kylian Mbappé, which pushed frustration with the Spanish federation to new heights, and the mood darkened further. What was already a steep climb heading into Munich now feels like scaling Everest.

And yet, inside the club, the belief has not wavered.

They are leaning on history, and in some ways, fighting against it. Bayern Munich have advanced in 30 of the 31 ties in which they won the first leg away from home. Still, Madrid’s mindset remains unchanged. In the Champions League, it is not about how, it is about who. That is a tune this club knows by heart, especially when it comes to the improbable.

Munich may demand an extraordinary act of faith. But that faith is very much alive.

Arbeloa sets the tone: “Ready to fight”

At the top of that pyramid of belief is Álvaro Arbeloa.

Speaking from the heart of the Santiago Bernabéu after the Girona draw, he delivered a series of messages aimed at rallying the group. His final remark captured the mood: Bayern will face white shirts, a famous crest, and, in his words, “a team ready to fight.”

But his most powerful message came earlier.

“We have to make a huge effort. This is our game, and we’re clear about that. We have to go to Germany to win. Fully convinced. Ready to lay it all on the line.”

Those were not just public comments. They echoed what he had already told the squad behind closed doors.

Inside the locker room

Arbeloa made his stance clear while the sting of the first-leg loss was still fresh.

In the locker room immediately after that defeat, he delivered a message identical in spirit to his press conference: if any team can win in Munich, it is Real Madrid. Players welcomed the show of confidence. According to sources, it lifted spirits at a critical moment.

Whether that belief translates on the field is another question. It did not show against Girona. Whether it holds up over 90 minutes at the Allianz Arena remains to be seen. But internally, it has had a positive effect.

Arbeloa’s hands-on approach

This communication style reflects the coach’s broader approach.

Since arriving, he has focused on building relationships through proximity and dialogue. Conversations, often held on that now-familiar gray sofa and beyond, have become central to his management style. From day one, he has asked questions, trying to understand his players on a deeper level.

He has not avoided difficult situations either. His handling of Raúl Asencio is a recent example. After disciplinary issues, the young academy player returned to the starting lineup against Girona following an apology, signaling a willingness to balance authority with trust.

Real Madrid’s season hanging by a thread

Against Girona, however, the message did not translate into results.

Now everything hinges on Wednesday. The return leg in Munich will define Madrid’s season.

As for LaLiga, hopes have all but vanished. Just 55 days ago, Madrid sat atop the table. Now, after their draw and Barcelona’s win over Espanyol, the gap stands at nine points with seven games remaining. A comeback feels unrealistic.

That leaves the Champions League. Overturning a 2-1 deficit against Bayern is more than a test. It is a last lifeline. For many, it borders on impossible.

Belief beyond Madrid

Not everyone sees it that way.

Bayern coach Vincent Kompany struck a cautious tone after the first leg, saying he considers the tie far from over heading into the return. Girona manager Míchel echoed that sentiment after his team’s draw, insisting Madrid are capable of turning it around.

Even opposing players seem to sense it. As Míchel revealed, conversations with Madrid players left him with the impression that belief inside the squad remains strong.

Above all, Arbeloa believes. He made it clear on Tuesday. He repeated it on Friday. And for Wednesday, his message is simple: Go to Munich ready to give everything.

If they do not, it will not just be the tie that ends. It will be Real Madrid’s season.
