Real Madrid legend Sergio Ramos offers to play for former club again

Sergio Ramos isn’t just looking to take control of Sevilla from the boardroom. The veteran Spanish defender also wants to lace up his boots and help the team on the field. The former Real Madrid star, who made a return to Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán during the 2023-24 season, has offered to step in and support Matías Almeyda’s struggling squad.

After conceding four goals in Mallorca, Sevilla now has the worst defensive record in La Liga. The club has allowed 37 goals so far this season, highlighting a backline that suffers from both inexperience and a lack of quality.

Ramos training solo and exploring ownership after Mexico departure

Ramos, 39, has been training alone since ending his contract with Monterrey in Mexico. Recently, he signed a letter of intent to purchase Sevilla, a process that could take several months to complete.

If he were already the club owner, Ramos would be barred from playing under current regulations. But that’s not the case yet, and as a free agent, he could technically join the team even after the winter transfer window closed. Sevilla also has an open spot on its first-team roster.

Why Ramos’ Sevilla return might not happen

The main obstacle is Sevilla’s salary cap, which the club has already exceeded. Reports suggest Ramos would not insist on a high salary, but approval from La Liga would still be required. Ultimately, the decision rests with club president José María del Nido Carrasco, sporting director Antonio Cordón, and head coach Matías Almeyda.
