The story behind Vini Jr’s ‘crybaby’ celebration to Manchester City fans
The Brazilian celebrated his first goal, a penalty, by gesturing as if he were crying.

“Stop Crying Your Heart Out.” An iconic phrase in England, but especially in Manchester. It is the title of an Oasis song, the city’s anthem. But coming from the voice of Noel Gallagher, a lifelong Manchester City fan and one of the club’s most famous supporters, it also found its way into the stands of the Etihad Stadium.
It happened last season, during the play-offs. A banner aimed at Vinícius hung in the stadium. Next to the phrase was an image of Rodrigo Hernández with the Ballon d’Or. And a season later, Vinícius responded.
Vini scored both goals. The second, late in the game, was the icing on the cake. But the first was the one that changed everything, the one that sealed the tie. First, the ball struck the woodwork. Then it hit Bernardo Silva’s elbow. Penalty, goal, and celebration. Vinícius looked towards the stands, smiling, mimicking tears. Then he ran to the corner flag, again staring at the crowd, speaking to them from the pitch.
And he spoke afterwards as well.
“That’s why football is so good, it always gives you another chance,” the Brazilian said with a smile, still on the field, speaking to the microphone after his decisive performance.
The question was inevitable. It was about that response, about the celebration. And the answer was sincere. Vinícius did not hide it. He still had what had happened in mind.
