Villa, Newcastle and Wolves set to decide fate of 2021-22 Premier League title
Both table topping Man City and Liverpool have five league games remaining in the campaign with both teams set to face Aston Villa, Newcastle and Wolves during the run-in.
The 2021-22 Premier League title-race is set to go to the wire with Manchester City holding a slender one point advantage ahead of Liverpool on 79 points.
There are only five matches outstanding in the Premier League season earlier in the week, the governing body confirmed the times and dates of all remaining match-days with both City and Liverpool still involved in the Champions League campaign and Jurgen Klopp’s men finalists of the 21-22 FA Cup Final where the ‘Reds’ will face Chelsea at Wembley Stadium on 14 May.
Outstanding fixtures
Both Liverpool and Manchester City were handed new dates for their respective Premier League matches against Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Liverpool’s match with Southampton has been moved to Tuesday 17 May, five days before the end of the league campaign, to accommodate their FA Cup final against Chelsea, which takes place at Wembley on 14 May.
Man City will face Wolves on Wednesday 11 May. The fixture was postponed earlier this month due to City’s FA Cup semi-final, where they were beaten by fellow title-chasers Liverpool. The rescheduled match against Wolves means City will play three league games over a seven-day period.
Liverpool, who are firm favourites to advance to the UCL final after a comfortable win over Villarreal in the Champions League first leg on Wednesday, will play two league matches and the FA Cup final in a week, as they chase a quadruple of League Cup, FA Cup, Premier League and Champions League wins.
Villa, Newcastle and Wolves hold the key
From the remaining five league games outstanding, both the Sky Blues and the Reds have three games against Newcastle, Villa and Wolves with current Villa manager Steven Gerrard an Anfield legend and the former Liverpool player desperate to spoil a City title win on the last day of the season.
Both Wolves and Newcastle are safe from the drop zone and harbour an outside chance of securing a seventh place finish which would secure a place in UEFA’s Conference League next season.
