CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

How many times has Liverpool reached the Champions League final?

Jürgen Klopp takes his Reds into a semi-final against Spanish outfit Villarreal, and if they can blow the Spaniards out of the water, it’s another final.

When German manager Jürgen Klopp left Borussia Dortmund to join Liverpool he knew that he was coming to a club with a great history. Of course, there are many football clubs scattered across the globe with wonderful histories, but the Reds on Merseyside also had the silverware to back it up, and were in need of a manager who could return them to the very top of the game. It was the perfect match.

Liverpool and their European love affair

The Premier League side are striving to be Champions of Europe for the seventh time, a feat that would move them into joint second place alongside AC Milan, and four more than any other English side, the next closest being their bitter rivals Manchester United on three.

Standing in their way first is Villarreal, who have performed, many would say, miracles to get to this stage, overcoming Juventus and Bayern Munich in the previous two knockout rounds. If the team from the home of The Beatles can sink the Yellow Submarine, then either Manchester City or Real Madrid will meet them in the Parisien final.

An appearance in the 2022 Champions League final would be Liverpool’s 10th - combining the old European Cup with the rebranded version - with the club’s fans having seen them handed runners-up medals on three occasions, 1985, 2007 and 2018. The latter of those, in Kiev against Los Blancos, has some supporters dreaming of a rematch on 28 May.
