Wayne Rooney on Erik ten Hag: “He will receive criticism, but I think the players can do more”
Rooney says it’s not all Erik ten Hag’s fault and believes that the players can do more.
Birmingham City manager Wayne Rooney says that Erik ten Hag will take all the criticism for the poor run Manchester United are on because he is the manager of the club, but the former English forward believes that the players in the squad can do more.
United’s situation is worrying, they are currently eighth in the Premier League and have just come off the back of two defeats, the first against Manchester City in the Manchester derby and the second in the EFL Cup against Newcastle United. Both games ended in 3-0 losses for the Old Trafford side.
“That’s the job. That’s part of the job, we all know that when we take jobs,” Rooney told Sky Sports.
“I know coming here [Birmingham City] there is a lot of pressure. I’m sure Ten Hag knows that at Man United.
“It’s not going as well as they’d like or would have hoped but the players need to take responsibility. I know some of the players, they’re not performing at the levels which I know they have.
“Of course, ultimately it starts and ends with the manager, that’s part of being a manager. You’ll get the critics after the last few weeks but players can do a lot more.”
