It’s fair to say that the traditional powerhouse and most successful Mexican club side are in something of a slump. The side from Mexico DF are currently enduring their third-worst league start in history sitting in 15th place in the 18 team Apertura 2022 (four points from four games) and Las Águilas haven’t lifted a trophy since the 2019 Apertura.

An attempt to bring themselves back into the foreground of Mexican football, a few years ago América turned to an old acquaintance of Real Madrid: Santiago Solari.

The Argentine took América to the final of the Concacaf Champions League in 2021 and finished the Apertura as leaders, but Monterrey and Pachuca frustrated Las Águilas’ dream and after more poor domestic form, Solari was relieved of his duties with current manager Fernando Ortiz currently overseeing the side.

Tonight’s San Francisco friendly game against Real Madrid will offer Club América a breather from the domestic game with their Torneo Apertura clash against Santos Laguna being cancelled from the midweek round of games to facilitate the glamorous pre-season clash at Oracle Park with the Spanish league champions in town.

A high presence of ‘Agulllas’ fans are expected to show up in San Francisco with coach Ortiz expected to field a strong América side against Madrid with the manager hoping to stem the flow of two defeats against high profile opposition after 2-1 losses to both Man City and Chelsea respectively.

América possible XI

América seem set to employ a 4-3-3 formation with captain Ochoa manning the sticks. A back four featuring: Jorge Sanchez, Caceres, Araujo and Fuentes will be protected with a midfield trio of: Aquino, Damm and J. Dos Santos. Leading the line will be Henry Martin augmented by Fidalgo and Paraguayan international Richard Sanchez.
