The English Premier League is generally accepted as the most competitive on the planet, regularly blowing other leagues out of the footballing water with their spending. There was plenty of noise generated this summer, of course, from the Saudi Pro League which secured the signings of top-tier players including Benzema, Kanté, Neymar and Mané, with stories continuing of a mind-blowing $200 million-ish offer in the pipeline for Mohamed Salah. In another twist, although somewhat more isolated to Miami, Major League Soccer acquired Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba.

Consequently, it has been a challenging market but we still witnessed the most expensive signing in the history of the English league, with Brighton happy to see the sizeable Stamford Bridge wallet open once again.

We keep hearing that the game’s bubble must burst, but it was Moisés Caicedo who became the most expensive transfer in the history of the Premier League, as Chelsea handed over a reported $145 million to Brighton for his acquisition. The total expenditure in the EPL amounts to around $856 million. Consequently, it is expected to be another highly competitive, and intriguing, season in the Premier League, with Manchester City aiming to defend their title.
