The first leg score at half-time was special, as was that at the FT whistle. Now we prepare for part two with an all-time record within grasp.

Update:

The record for the most goals scored in a single UEFA Champions League semifinal match now stands at nine – set in the extraordinary first-leg clash between Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich. And that was just a few days ago!

PSG-Bayern sets UCL single semi goal record

At 5-4, the game rewrote the competition’s history books, becoming the highest-scoring single semifinal game ever. Remarkably, the chaos started early. Five goals were packed into the first half alone – another record for this stage.

Harry Kane opened the scoring on 17 minutes, before Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (you’ll never guess who his icon is), João Neves (smaller than you may think), Michael Olise (what a gamble), and Ousmane Dembélé (part of the Adidas campaign) all struck before the break.

Oranges had, and we kept going. Dembélé and Kvaratskhelia both got another one each before Upamecano and Diaz tightened things up. We then went an incredible 23 minutes plus four additional ones without a goal... but there were still chances that could have made it even more ridiculous.

So to the second leg in Munich on Wednesday 6 May. How many more goals does this tie need to make it the highest scoring semifinal ever?

What’s the highest goal tally over two legs in a Champions League semifinal?

Across a two-leg semifinal tie, the benchmark remains higher. Inter Milan and Barcelona combined for 13 goals in 2025, matching the Champions League-era record after a 3-3 first leg and a dramatic 4-3 second-leg win at San Siro.

Before that, Liverpool and Roma also hit 13 goals in their 2017/18 semifinal.

Single games at different stages of this competition have gone even higher – Borussia Dortmund’s 8-4 win over Legia Warsaw (12 goals) remains the outright match record – but semifinals rarely open up like this.

That is what made the PSG vs Bayern clash stand apart. And now to part two...
