CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

What is Vinicius’ injury? Will he be fit to play in El Clásico against Barcelona?

The Champions League quarterfinal second leg against Manchester City took Los Blancos to extra-time, and in that, their star forward got hurt.

Following the first leg at the Santiago Bernabéu, which ended 3-3, the return fixture at the Etihad between Manchester City and Real Madrid had football enthusiasts wanting more of the same. The goals didn’t rain down once again, but as the whistle blew for the end of normal time, the teams could not be separated.

An early strike from Rodrygo had the visitors ahead, and Carlo Ancelotti’s players managed to hold onto that lead until Kevin de Bruyne fired home an equaliser on the 75th minute. Extra-time beckoned as a new Champions League record was set.

Why was Vinicius Jr substituted?

Just before the end of the first period of extra-time, Los Blancos got a rare breakaway, Vinicius sprinting down the right channel with an opportunity to feed the ball into Jude Bellingham who had found space in the centre.

But before the Brazilian could make the pass, Kyle Walker had pressured him out of possession with strength and pace. But the grimace for the Madrid player suggested something wasn’t right.

A quick assessment and Ancelotti made the switch. Lucas Vázquez came on for Vini and as he held the inside of his thigh going off. Madrid went on to win 4-3 on penalties and now face Bayern Munich in the semi-final.

As we await a statement from the Spanish club, thoughts turn to this weekend’s big game in LaLiga, as eternal rivals Barcelona arrive in the capital for El Clásico. Mixed reports followed with some suggesting that Vini had some muscle discomfort, while others said he was fine. Fans will be hoping the Brazilian is ready to effectively kill off any talk of Madrid not securing the title.
