The German giants have been impressed by what he is achieving at Leverkusen.

Xabi Alonso has guided Bayer Leverkusen to 22 wins, three draws and no defeats this season and his managerial performances have attracted the attention of some major clubs. According to a report produced by Relevo, Bayern Munich are considering him for the future.

The German giants have been impressed by what he is achieving at Leverkusen and reportedly want him to replace Thomas Tuchel when the German tactician’s spell at the club comes to an end. But what exactly do they like at the Allianz Arena? Bayern officials admire Alonso’s attitude, his way of working, and his knowledge of the club, where he spent the last three years of his playing career.

Ancelotti staying put at Real Madrid

Bayern want to take advantage of the fact that the other favourites to appoint him next - Real Madrid - have pulled out of the race by extending Carlo Ancelotti’s deal until 2026. They have given the Italian a vote of confidence and, although they monitored Alonso closely, he would have to wait for a return to the Bernabéu.

Alonso likes the idea of continuing his career in the Bundesliga and one of his goals as a coach is to manage the three big clubs where he shone as a player: Bayern, Madrid and Liverpool. Bayern could be his first port of call in what would be a first test in Europe’s elite.

Tuchel’s time

But this will all depend on Tuchel, although in Bavaria, there are already doubts about the German coach. He took over on 24 March after the sacking of Julian Nagelsmann and, less than a year later, he has lost the confidence of some members of the board. Some of his defeats, such as the loss to third-division side Saarbrucken in the first round of the cup and the 5-1 drubbing by Eintracht Frankfurt, have affected his reputation in some quarters.
