The United States will host the 48th edition Copa América from June 20 to July 14 2024. It will be the second time that the tournament, which traditionally determines the South American champions, has been held in North America. The US was selected as guest hosts of the 2016 edition - to mark CONMEBOL’s centenary, with 16 teams taking part - 10 from the CONMEBOL region and six guests from CONCACAF.

This edition will follow a similar format with 16 teams (10 CONMEBOL teams and six CONCACAF teams) split into four groups: A-D with the top two teams in each group advancing to the quarter finals.

Defending champions Argentina will be seeking to lift the trophy for a record 16th time and edge ahead of Uruguay to become the competition’s most successful nation.

2024 Copa América: qualified teams

The 10 CONMEBOL teams automatically qualify for the tournament. They will be joined by six CONCACAF teams, who qualify through League A of the Nations League. The four quarter-finals winners progress directly to the tournament, while the runners-up head into the play-in round, two single-leg matches to be played on 23 March 2024 in Frisco, Texas.

Four teams from the CONCACAF region have booked their place - the United States (who had to qualify via the standard route like everyone else, despite being tournament hosts) and Panama were first. Both qualified after winning their CONCACAF Nations League quarter finals - the USMNT beat Tinidad and Tobago 4-2 on aggregate (3-0 and 1-2) while Panama eased to a 1-6 aggregate win over Costa Rica (0-3 and 1-3).

On Tuesday evening Mexico qualified dramatically coming back from a 2-0 first-leg loss against Honduras to win by the same scoreline at home and then progress on penalties. They were joined by Jamaica who also trailed from the first leg (2-1) but overcame Canada 3-2 to go into the semifinals and the Copa América.
