Can Colombia earn historic US win?
In the final last-eight tie at the new tournament, the Colombians will attempt to secure their first ever win over the four-time world champions, who suffered a surprise defeat to Mexico in the final round of the group stage.
Las Cafeteras will battle it out with the Stars and Stripes for the right to face Canada in the semi-finals, after the Canucks progressed to the Gold Cup’s penultimate stage by defeating Costa Rica. Evelyne Viens’ extra-time goal gave the Canadians a 1-0 win at Los Angeles’ BMO Stadium, which is hosting all four quarter-final ties.
Who is match referee Marianela Araya?
Araya, whose appointment to USWNT vs Colombia was announced on Thursday, has been a FIFA international referee since 2014. Having previously refereed at age-group Women’s World Cups, she was named among the officials for the senior tournament last July and August.
Araya did not take charge of any games in Australia and New Zealand, but she was the fourth official for five group-stage fixtures, including Colombia’s 2-0 win over South Korea.
So far at the W Gold Cup, the Costa Rican has overseen one match: Mexico’s 8-0 Group A thrashing of the Dominican Republic, in which she showed just a single yellow card.
