Why Schlotterbeck renewing with Dortmund is good news for Real Madrid
The new contract for the Borussia Dortmund centre-back includes a release clause for a few clubs.

Borussia Dortmund have already announced the renewal of Nico Schlotterbeck’s contract. This was first reported by Kicker, which adds that the agreement will not put an end to rumours linking him with Real Madrid. The reason is that the German international’s new deal includes a release clause, valid only for a select group of clubs and set between $62 million and $70 million, leaving the door open for a potential departure as early as this summer.
Negotiations, which had been ongoing since the end of last year, have reportedly concluded with a full agreement following final talks between the defender’s representatives and Dortmund’s management. The club has confirmed an extension until 2031, bringing an end to a drawn-out saga that kept both the supporters and the club’s sporting directors on tenterhooks. In the end, both sides made concessions to reach a deal.
The agreement also includes a salary increase for Schlotterbeck, with a fixed annual wage of around $11 million, well below some of the higher figures previously reported. For BVB, the renewal primarily acts as financial protection: without the extension, Schlotterbeck could have left this year for a significantly lower fee or even on a free transfer in 2027. At the same time, the defender retains the flexibility to take the next step in his career whenever he considers it the right moment.
