Gilberto Mora makes history with Mexico at the World Cup
The Mexican midfielder is now the youngest player ever to appear for El Tri at a World Cup.

Mexican soccer has a new star inspiring an entire generation, right here at the 2026 World Cup.
Gilberto Mora, the midfielder developed by Club Tijuana’s academy system, has officially become the youngest Mexican player ever to appear at a World Cup, a milestone that secures his place in the country’s soccer history. Mora entered Mexico’s match against South Africa in the 65th minute, replacing Brian Gutiérrez. Mexico ran out 2-0 winners over South Africa in the opening game of the tournament.

How old is Gilberto Mora?
At just 17 years old, the Chiapas native earned a place in Mexico’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, which is being hosted by Mexico, the United States and Canada.
His appearance breaks a record that had stood for nearly a century. The previous mark belonged to Manuel Rosas, who had held the distinction of being the youngest Mexican player to appear at a World Cup since the inaugural tournament in Uruguay in 1930.
Gilberto Mora becomes Mexico’s youngest World Cup player
Mora’s rise has been remarkably fast.
Born in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, on October 14, 2008, he made his Liga MX debut for Tijuana before his 16th birthday. Since then, he has continued to develop thanks to his vision, technical ability and maturity on the field, qualities that quickly caught the attention of the coaching staff led by Javier Aguirre.
His World Cup appearance makes him the youngest player ever to represent Mexico on soccer’s biggest stage.
Before reaching the World Cup, Mora had already shown his potential with the national team. During the 2025 Gold Cup, he became the youngest player ever to debut for Mexico and later helped El Tri win the tournament, cementing his status as one of the country’s brightest young prospects.
FIFA has also highlighted the teenage midfielder as one of the tournament’s most exciting emerging talents. In addition to becoming the youngest Mexican ever to play in a World Cup, Mora is among the youngest players in the entire competition, reflecting the confidence Mexico has placed in both his talent and his ability to compete at the highest level.
With his historic appearance, Gilberto Mora has done more than break records. He represents the beginning of a new era for the Mexican national team. His youth, talent and confidence have made him one of the country’s biggest hopes for the future and a symbol of renewal for a nation dreaming of making history on home soil.
