Today, South Africa takes the field at Mexico City Stadium to face Mexico in the opening game of the 2026 World Cup, 16 years after the two nations first met in a World Cup curtain-raiser.
The team coached by Hugo Broos heads into its tournament debut under pressure after a difficult run of results in warmup games. South Africa has not won a game since December 2025, when it defeated Zimbabwe in the group stage of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Since that victory, Bafana Bafana have recorded three draws – against Panama, Nicaragua and Jamaica – along with defeats to Cameroon and Panama. The team had previously put together an impressive 11-game unbeaten streak before that run came to an end against Egypt in the opening round of the Africa Cup of Nations group stage.
How South Africa is to line up against Mexico
In goal, Ronwen Williams starts between the posts, bringing experience from his club career with Mamelodi Sundowns.
The back line features Khuliso Mudau, Ime Okon, Nkosinathi Sibisi, Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Aubrey Modiba.
In midfield, Broos relies on Teboho Mokoena, Yaya Sithole and Jayden Adams to provide balance and control.
Up front, the attack is led by Lyle Foster and Iqraam Rayners, who will be tasked with breaking down Mexico’s defense.
