Cristian Roldan’s path to the USMNT - and the family support that made it possible

“This is my squad, my family here in our backyard.”

For Cristian Roldan, the road to the USMNT did not begin in a professional academy or on some perfectly manicured field. It started at home in Pico Rivera, California, where soccer became both a passion and a lifeline for a kid trying to figure out where he fit in.

The evolution of Cristian Roldan

Roldan’s multicultural upbringing played a huge role in shaping his identity. His parents arrived in the United States from El Salvador and Guatemala “to seek a better life,” as the Seattle Sounders midfielder explains in the interview for USMNT 26. Resources were limited, English was unfamiliar and adapting was not always easy.

“When I was born, when we were growing up, Spanish was the first language that we learned,” Roldan says. “We didn’t learn English until we went to school.”

That adjustment period could have been isolating. Instead, soccer became the connection point.

The international language of soccer

“The one thing that we did pick up really fast was soccer,” he says. “And we’re extremely thankful that we did.”

The Roldan brothers and their love for soccer quickly became inseparable. Older brother Cesar played first. Cristian followed. Then came younger brother Alex, now also with the Sounders.

“Once I saw my older brother pick it up, I naturally gravitated towards the soccer ball,” Roldan explains as part of the build up to the ‘home’ World Cup. “Then the same thing happened with my little brother, so it was a bit of a domino effect.”

Family drives team focus for Roldan

The game soon became the center of family life. Weekends meant tournaments everywhere. If one brother had a game, the others were nearby waiting on the sidelines with a ball of their own.

“I think that’s where our love for the game came from,” Roldan says. “Simultaneously watching my brother play, but also kicking the ball in the background.”

The family support system remains one of the defining themes of his story. Even now, all three brothers are still deeply connected to professional soccer. Cristian and Alex share a locker room in Seattle, while Cesar works as head athletic trainer for the LA Galaxy.

And while Roldan laughs about the personalities inside the household, the affection is obvious.

My older brother always seemed like he wanted to be the man in the spotlight,” he jokes. “My little brother was all over the place... and I just wanted to fit in and be a good child to my parents.

There’s a humility in that line that says plenty to me about the player Roldan became. Reliable. Hard-working. Team-first.

Diversity in United States soccer

From Pico Rivera to the USMNT, his story also resonates far beyond soccer. Roldan represents a generation of multicultural American players whose identities are shaped by more than one country, more than one language and more than one culture.

And through it all, the backyard yard image that he held up at the start of the interview never really disappeared.

“I’m really thankful that we did,” Roldan says of those endless hours with a ball at his feet, “because it turned out to be our entire life.”
