The 2030 World Cup final is the Bernabéu’s to lose

Spain is backing the Bernabéu bid, but Real Madrid and Florentino Pérez have long been working to bring the 2030 final to Madrid.

The 2030 FIFA World Cup is still four years away, but speculation over where the tournament’s biggest game will be played is already heating up.

Some claims have suggested President Donald Trump could somehow influence the decision over the World Cup final, while others have pointed to an alleged political campaign against Spain, with Morocco portrayed as the main beneficiary. In reality, none of those theories reflect how the process works.

FIFA has yet to make its key decisions

So far, FIFA has not formally begun the decisive phase of planning the 2030 World Cup. The governing body is the only organization with the authority to determine how the tournament will ultimately be structured, and major decisions are expected after the summer.

One of the first tasks will be trimming the list of host venues across the three co-hosting nations: Spain, Portugal, and Morocco. Some stadiums currently under consideration are expected to make the final cut, while others will lose out.

In recent days, representatives from the Spanish clubs and organizations involved in the World Cup bid have toured stadiums in the United States at FIFA’s request. The goal was not to replicate the model used at the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, but rather to understand the different demands placed on modern World Cup venues.

According to those involved, comparisons between American stadiums and European soccer venues are of limited value. The 2030 tournament is expected to have a different identity, with a stronger emphasis on traditional soccer culture than the entertainment-focused approach that naturally accompanies many of North America’s multipurpose stadiums.

The Bernabéu remains the leading contender

When it comes to the 2030 World Cup final, Spain continues to push its case. However, Real Madrid has reportedly been working behind the scenes even longer, with club president Florentino Pérez maintaining direct contact with FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

Within FIFA, there is said to be strong support for holding the final at Estadio Santiago Bernabéu. Infantino’s close relationship with Pérez, combined with the Bernabéu’s place in soccer history, has helped strengthen its candidacy.

FIFA officials also point to the symbolic importance of staging the tournament’s showcase event on the Iberian Peninsula, where the 2030 World Cup project originated before Morocco joined as a co-host.

While other stadiums remain under consideration, the Bernabéu is widely viewed as the benchmark venue.

Trump’s comments created unexpected controversy

The ongoing 2026 World Cup has also created political ripples that have reached FIFA headquarters.

Donald Trump’s public comments on issues surrounding the tournament, including remarks connected to disciplinary matters involving U.S. forward Folarin Balogun, have generated controversy inside world soccer. According to the report, FIFA officials were unsettled by political involvement in matters that have traditionally remained under the governing body’s control.

Had those comments never been made, the issue might have remained a relatively minor controversy. Instead, they fueled broader debate over politics and FIFA’s long-standing commitment to maintaining its independence from government influence.

A key date is approaching

Another significant milestone arrives in March 2027, when FIFA will hold its presidential election during the organization’s congress in Morocco.

If the current balance of power remains unchanged, many inside the game believe they already know where the 2030 World Cup final will be played.

The date to remember is July 21, 2030.
