Diego Forlán has been appointed as Uruguay’s surprise new head coach following Marcelo Bielsa’s departure. The former striker will take charge on an interim basis through March 2027 and is set to make his debut on the Celeste bench during September’s international window. He will also coach Uruguay’s Under-20 team, leading them into the South American Championship as they chase qualification for next year’s FIFA U-20 World Cup.

What coaching experience does Forlán have?

The former Atlético Madrid and Villarreal forward has very limited coaching experience. His only managerial spells came during a brief stint with Peñarol in 2019 and later with Atenas, a club in Uruguay’s second division. He now faces the biggest opportunity of his coaching career, but also one of its toughest challenges. His future in the role will depend on Uruguay’s performances in upcoming friendlies and is also expected to be influenced by internal elections within the Uruguayan Football Association.

Ignacio Alonso, president of the Uruguayan Football Association, confirmed the move during an interview with Teledoce.

“If an agreement with Diego Forlán is reached in the coming hours, he will become the coach of the Under-20 national team and take charge of the upcoming friendly matches. He’s excited about the opportunity, although there are still a few details to finalize.”

The appointment marks a dramatic shift in Uruguay’s approach. It represents a return to one of the country’s greatest soccer icons, despite his lack of experience managing a locker room, let alone one filled with world-class players. The move is seen as an attempt to restore stability by putting a respected national figure at the helm.

Forlán, 47, was one of the leaders of Uruguay’s most successful modern era. He earned 112 caps and remains the country’s third-highest scorer with 36 international goals. He also helped Uruguay win the 2011 Copa América and, a year earlier, starred at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, where he won the tournament’s Golden Ball as its best player.
