The veteran goalkeeper will arrive at the 2026 World Cup with a place among Mexico’s most enduring soccer icons already secured.
Guillermo Ochoa joins Messi and Ronaldo with rare World Cup milestone
Javier Aguirre’s final roster for the 2026 World Cup included several notable names, and one of them was Guillermo Ochoa, who will arrive at the tournament as one of the most experienced leaders on the Mexican national team.
Ochoa will become Mexico’s oldest player at a World Cup
Ochoa will make history by becoming the oldest Mexican soccer player to appear at a World Cup. The goalkeeper will be 40 years and 332 days old at the start of the tournament, an unprecedented mark for a Mexican player in the sport’s biggest international competition.
He will surpass the record held by Alfredo Talavera, who went to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar at 40 years and 29 days old. The new mark puts Memo at the top of a list reserved for the longest-serving players ever to represent Mexico at a World Cup.
He will also move ahead of major figures in Mexican soccer history such as Rafael Márquez, who played at the 2018 World Cup in Russia at 39. Legendary names including Óscar “Conejo” Pérez, Cuauhtémoc Blanco, Claudio Suárez and Antonio “La Tota” Carbajal will also sit below him.
Ochoa to share record with soccer’s biggest names
Ochoa will also share the record of appearing at six World Cups with global stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. That milestone places the Mexican in an exclusive group of players who have stayed relevant for more than two decades at the highest level.
